Designing Reuters for
Lasting App Engagement
Certain internal data, research, and product details have been generalized or omitted.

Product strategy
Connected onboarding, value communication, and retention
Strategic tradeoff
Balanced personalization depth with onboarding completion
Product outcome
Recommendations incorporated into upcoming product work
The problem
Subscribers weren’t always recognizing enough ongoing value to build a consistent app habit.
Analysis of 78K+ subscribers showed that some new subscribers were not recognizing personalized value early enough to establish a habit of returning to the app.
When interest in news decreased, subscribers had to choose between continuing and fully cancelling. There was no option to pause and return when the news cycle became more relevant.
Strategy
Supporting retention across the subscriber lifecycle
Recognize value
Personalized onboarding and earlier feature discovery
Build a habit
Relevant content that encourages repeat engagement
Adapt commitment
Pause options and clearer value reinforcement
Return easily
A simpler path back when interest increases
Interventions
A personalized onboarding experience
Explored and prototyped ways to help new subscribers recognize relevant value earlier, discover useful features, and establish a reason to return to the app.
- Personalized topic selection
- Feature highlights based on user goals
- Relevant content to drive early value
Start simple, then let high-intent users go deeper
I balanced personalization with completion by segmenting users by intent: one high-value question gave every user immediate personalization, while deeper options served high-intent users, increasing subscription and retention likelihood.

A flexible pause option & value reminder
Proposed a pause option because news interest changes over time, giving subscribers more control while preserving an easy path back when they’re ready. Added a value reminder for users who can be saved through being reminded of what they are missing out on by cancelling.
- Self-serve pause option
- Clear reminder of retained value
- Easy path to resume anytime
Add value without creating an obstructive exit
A pause option and value recap could improve retention, but too many steps could obstruct cancellation. I solved this by reducing the number of screens, while still including value recap and pause, in a flow that was easy to follow.

Outcome
Recommendations from this work were incorporated into an upcoming Reuters product experience, now in user research ahead of release.
How I’d measure success
| Intervention | Primary KPI | Guardrail |
|---|---|---|
| Personalized onboarding | Day-30 subscriber retention | Onboarding abandonment rate |
| Habit formation | Weekly engaged subscribers | Notification opt-out rate |
| Pause and cancellation | Net retained subscription revenue | Cancellation completion time and support contacts |
What I learned
Value recognition starts early
New subscribers are more likely to build a habit when they quickly see content and features that are relevant to them.
Personalization creates a reason to return
Tailoring the experience to individual interests helps subscribers find ongoing value in the app.
Subscription behavior follows content cycles
Interest in news fluctuates over time, and subscription experiences should account for shifting needs.
